my discovery of the Boyz
So some of you know I was doing my thesis on musicals... and I'm almost done with it (don't ask until after I turned it in and after I have graduated on 5/13/2007). But yeah, before doing my thesis I didn't know much about musicals and the only ones I was obsessed with were Avenue Q and the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!
I am glad, however, that I ended up seeing the touring cast of Altar Boyz here in LA on a whim. Seriously... I had heard of the show and I was in NYC for New Years (when I saw Q and the Bee)... and I walked by New World Stages and seeing their ads, but didn't really give much thought to it. But I needed to see musicals for my thesis so I decided to see Altar Boyz... and boy, did that change my life.
The show was amazing. I was so impressed by the actors, how they were able to sing, dance, and act all at the same time. That takes real talent. Kudos to the writers and songwriters as well for writing such a witty show. Not only that, but the actors were one of the nicest people ever when talking to fans and to the theater people. I saw them during their last show in LA and it was so touching when I saw them shake hands with the ushers, and saying "thank you" and "goodbye" to them. They're just so down to earth.
I officially become obsessed with the show when I ended up seeing it 3 times (twice in LA and once in SF for spring break) and had the urge to learn the dances. I'm also seeing the regional production of the show here in Long Beach, CA... weeee, I'm so glad I live in California. I started dragging new friends to go see the show with me each time and I converted all of them. They thought I was crazy when I wouldn't shut up about the show and they thought I was weird for learning their dances.... but after seeing the show, they wanted to talk about Altar Boyz, learn the dances, and more.
My friends say that it's a good thing to be into and it's a good obsession... at least I'm not like addicted to crack cocaine or have a "exhaustion" problem. Weeeeeeee.....
